About Melatonin
A signal of the night.
Indoleamine hormone
Molecular formula: C₁₃H₁₆N₂O₂
Melatonin is an indoleamine: a small molecule built around two joined rings, with a methoxy group and an acetamide side chain. A modest structure, built from familiar parts.
In humans, melatonin is secreted by the pineal gland and participates in the timing of daily rhythms. Its levels usually rise during the biological night, while light exposure can suppress that rise. The timing of the signal matters as much as its presence.
The drawing shows the neutral molecule, from its joined rings to the end of its side chain. A molecule that marks the hours of darkness.
