About Adrenaline
The chemistry of a response.
Catecholamine hormone
Molecular formula: C₉H₁₃NO₃
Adrenaline, also called epinephrine, belongs to the catecholamine family. Its ring carries two neighbouring hydroxyl groups, while a short side chain contains an alcohol and a methylated amine. One carbon gives the molecule a defined handedness.
Released by the adrenal glands, adrenaline is part of the response to acute stress. It helps coordinate changes in circulation and the availability of metabolic fuel. Its effects depend on the receptors and tissues receiving the signal.
The drawing shows the naturally occurring R form, also known as L-epinephrine, as the neutral free base. One small mark fixes its handedness; without it, the drawing could show either mirror image.
