About GABA
Four carbons, two ends.
Amino acid neurotransmitter
Molecular formula: C₄H₉NO₂
GABA stands for gamma-aminobutyric acid. It has a four-carbon chain, with an amino group at one end and a carboxylic acid group at the other. Its open structure is a contrast to the joined rings of many other chemical messengers.
In the mature brain, GABA is a major inhibitory neurotransmitter. It often makes a receiving neuron less likely to fire, helping shape the timing and pattern of activity. Its action depends on the cell and its receptors; inhibition is a cellular role, not a synonym for a feeling.
The drawing uses the uncharged acid form. In water near physiological pH, GABA is mainly a zwitterion, carrying a positive and a negative charge within the same molecule. One short chain in a much larger conversation.
