About ATP
Energy, in constant exchange.
Nucleotide · adenosine triphosphate
Molecular formula: C₁₀H₁₆N₅O₁₃P₃
ATP stands for adenosine triphosphate. The molecule brings together an adenine base, a ribose sugar and a chain of three phosphate groups. That phosphate chain gives the drawing its distinctive reach.
Cells use ATP to couple energy-releasing processes to work that requires energy. Its conversion to ADP and phosphate helps power processes including muscle contraction, active transport and the building of larger molecules. ATP is continually used and regenerated.
The drawing shows the neutral free-acid form. In living cells, ATP is generally charged and often paired with magnesium ions. One way to draw the molecule at the centre of cellular energy transfer.
