Peptide hormone

Oxytocin is a small peptide built from nine amino acids. A bond between two sulphur atoms draws part of the chain into a ring, giving this compact molecule its distinctive shape.
It acts as both a hormone and a chemical messenger in the brain. Its established roles include uterine contractions during childbirth and the release of milk during breastfeeding. It is also involved in social behaviour and bonding, where its effects depend on the setting and the individual.
The drawing follows the chain from one amino acid to the next and closes the ring where the two sulphur atoms meet. Connection, down to the bonds themselves.
