Dopamine belongs to the catecholamine family. Its structure has a six-membered carbon ring, two neighbouring hydroxyl groups and a short chain ending in an amine. A few familiar chemical pieces form a remarkably versatile messenger.
In the brain, dopamine is involved in the control of movement and in motivation, learning and reward. Those roles are carried by different pathways and receptors; a single label such as pleasure cannot describe them all.
