About Creatine
A partner to ATP.
Guanidino compound · glycine derivative
Molecular formula: C₄H₉N₃O₂
Creatine is a small nitrogen-containing molecule derived from glycine. Its compact structure brings together a carboxylic acid group and a guanidine group, with a methyl group attached to the nitrogen between them.
Inside cells, creatine and phosphocreatine form part of a system that buffers the supply of ATP. Creatine kinase transfers a phosphate group between ATP and creatine; the reverse reaction can regenerate ATP from ADP. The exchange matters in tissues with changing energy demands, including muscle and brain.
The drawing uses the uncharged free-acid form recorded by PubChem and ChEBI. Under physiological conditions, creatine is mainly a zwitterion, with opposite charges in the same molecule. One half of a reversible exchange; phosphocreatine is the other.
