About Caffeine
The molecule in the ritual.
Purine alkaloid · trimethylxanthine
Molecular formula: C₈H₁₀N₄O₂
Caffeine is a naturally occurring plant alkaloid found in coffee and tea. Chemically, it is a trimethylxanthine: a joined ring system carrying three methyl groups, with nitrogen and oxygen woven into its compact framework.
Its familiar effects involve blocking adenosine receptors. Adenosine signalling helps regulate sleep and wakefulness; caffeine temporarily interferes with part of that signalling rather than supplying cellular energy itself.
The structure is identical in an espresso and a cup of tea. Familiar chemistry, seen a little closer.
