About Acetylcholine
Where a signal meets a cell.
Choline ester neurotransmitter
Molecular formula: C₇H₁₆NO₂⁺
Acetylcholine joins an acetate group to choline through an ester bond. At the other end, nitrogen is bonded to four carbon groups and carries a permanent positive charge. That small plus sign is part of the molecule itself.
It carries signals from motor nerves to skeletal muscle and also works in the autonomic nervous system and brain. Different receptors give the same messenger different effects. At many synapses, the enzyme acetylcholinesterase rapidly breaks it down, bringing the signal to an end.
The drawing shows the acetylcholine cation, its positive charge kept and no counterion added. A precise structure for a brief exchange between a nerve ending and the cell that receives its message.
